Second ladle furnace ordered from SMS
Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa has ordered a 150-ton ladle metallurgy furnace from SMS Demag, Pittsburgh. It will be the second ladle furnace for the Alabama mini-mill, which now produces about 1.1 million tons/year of plate products.
Nucor Steel acquired the Tuscaloosa mill from Corus Group Plc in 2004, and implemented a $250-million expansion program that added about 300,000 tons/year of capacity. That included a new DC electric arc furnace, a new ladle furnace, a new slab caster, and an update of the 102-in. Steckel mill.
According to SMS, the new LMF will have a single treatment position, and the project also includes an upgrade to the Level 1, 1.5, and 2 automation systems for the existing ladle furnace. SMS also installed the melt shop equipment in the last upgrade at Tuscaloosa.
