Nippon Steel Corp. and ArcelorMittal USA report they plan to add a second hot-dip galvanizing line for automotive sheet products at I/N Kote their joint-venture finishing complex in New Carlisle, IN. The investment is projected at $240 million, and operation is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2010.
No equipment contractor has been named for the new coating line, which will have an annual capacity of 540,000 tons, effectively doubling the current output of hot-dipped product at I/N Kote.
I/N Kote produces 500,000 tons/year of hot-dipped galvanized sheet and 450,000 tons/year of electrogalvanized sheet. Together with the adjacent I/N Tek cold-rolling complex, it was established in 1991 as a joint venture of Nippon Steel and the former Inland Steel Co., one of the predecessor companies to ArcelorMittal.
Cold-rolled coils for the new galvanizing line will be supplied by by ArcelorMittal's integrated works at Indiana Harbor in East Chicago, IN, and Burns Harbor, IN, as well as by I/N Tek.
"This is truly an exciting investment and one that will ensure ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel maintain our leadership position in supplying the North American automotive industry with high-quality steels," stated ArcelorMittal USA president and CEO Michael Rippey.
