Olympic Steel Inc. is planning to build a new service center in Sumter, SC, and expects the 10,000-ft2 operation to be in complete by the end of this year. The project is budgeted at $10 million, though Olympic has not detailed the scope of the operation, nor detailed any process equipment contracts.
“We are pleased to announce a new greenfield facility in Sumter, South Carolina,” stated Michael D. Siegal, Olympic Steel chairman and CEO.
“Complementing the 2006 acquisition of our North Carolina operations, we are excited to further expand our processing capabilities in the southeast region for our valued customers," Siegal added. "The Sumter location was particularly attractive to us because of its excellent proximity to original equipment manufacturers and the availability of a skilled labor force.”
Olympic Steel is a Cleveland-based chain of steel service centers and processors, focused on carbon, coated, and stainless sheet, coil, and plate products. It has 15 outlets nationwide.
Sumter is located in central South Carolina, east of Columbia in an area bounded by several interstate highways. The Carolinas are home to two Nucor Steel flat-rolled mini-mills.
In 2006, Olympic paid a reported $10.08 million for two service centers owned by PS&W Inc., in Siler City and Seagrove, NC.
